光ファイバ通信技術は、光学や古典・量子力学に代表される物理学の学問的知見を踏まえ、人工的な光であるレーザ光の発明、並びに超低損失な光ファイバの発明により発展してきました。理学から工学への展開の典型的な事例であります。ここでは、光ファイバ通信技術の過去、現在、未来を概観することにより理学から工学への技術的展開を紹介します。
