Japan is at a major crossroad. In science and technology, too, a series of major incidents have shaken the very foundation of the people trust in them. I feel this is a backlash against Japan pushing ahead with basic research, applied research, and development at the same time in recent years. I believe that researchers and engineers should be aware of science and technology in society Inherently, research of scientific technology must be taken to increasingly higher levels by repeating the cycle of three processes: creative research for finding new knowledge or method, development research for building upon such knowledge or method, and integration research for finding a true unity between such knowledge or method and society. Only the philosophy of evolving creation to integration can realize a scientific technology that society truly desires. The purpose of our university education is to nurture the students will and ability to think for themselves, to face up to unexplored problems. It also aims to instill the deep humanity of caring about others. It is my deepest wish that the students of this university develop autonomy and the humanity with a respect for others so that each one may take the initiative in expanding the frontiers.
